Dayhiking Eastern Sierras mid-June

Nice pics of what a heavy snowpack looks like around Mammoth/June Lake backcountry during late June. I think Mammoth got over 550 inches that year. When I was 18 I went over Piute Pass the last week of July in 1983 to TRY to catch big golden trout, big mistake. When we finally got over Piute Pass it looked just like these photos, Winter. Thanks for posting this. I don't think a lot of people realize how much snow there is this year in the backcountry and this shows everyone what conditions they could be getting themselves into. I have a trip of June 20th that will take me up towards the Ediza Lake area. My trip up there last year was perfect in late July (low snowpack that winter). With that being said, is this trip going to be doable in normal backpacking gear or am I going to need Crampons, Gaiters, etc... The people coming with are in shape military personnel but not avid backpackers with all those additional gear requirements. Any thoughts on if this is do able or if I should post pone this trip?

Here is a satellite image of Ediza Lake, on June 16th of 2019. The yellow pin is Ediza Lake. This year there is currently more snow on the ground than 2019 at this same time.

How are you able to get those historical satellite images?

I wouldn’t cancel either but I can tell you Mammoth has 700 inches at summit with another 3-4ft likely over weekend. I’m not looking too get up to high country (10-12k) until early August this year. 2017 was last big winter so see if you can pull some trip reports from that time.

there is still 4 months to go so who knows but if I was planning june trips right now I would only be looking at west side entries below 8k feet in seki and yosemite.

Remember that creek crossings may hamper getting very far up the trails.
