Odd Benchmark on top of Sawtooth Peak?

Post by acorad »

Hi all,

I climbed the 12,343 foot Sawtooth Peak near Mineral King in Sequoia over the weekend and it had an odd benchmark on the top that was inscribed with "Grand Canyon South Rim" and "elevation 7120."

Is there a story behind this? Is it an homage? Interpark Tomfoolery?

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Andy

Andy,

When I day hiked Rim to Rim with my daughters last year, we noticed that the Grand Canyon Conservancy sells these souvenirs. Perhaps some individual wants to start a collection on Sawtooth. Maybe the Mt Whitney souvenir benchmark will be next. Likely this will not be appreciated by the Park Service.

Andy,

Now a natural question is, "Is there a North Rim souvenir marker on the summit of Black Kaweah?" The Big Arroyo is hardly the Grand Canyon and Big Arroyo Creek is no Colorado River. But they are awesome, nonetheless!

Andy,
Somehow I missed this earlier: sure looks like there are some folk with a deviant sense of humor. Not quite littering, but not quite kosher. Still from the apparently fresh glue/adhesive, this was a well-thought-out prank. What next? Cameron
