Donahue Pass permit question

Post by Richardtr6 »

In August we are hiking from Agnews meadows northwards over the Donahue Pass via the JMT and then looping back over Blue Lake pass back into Ansel Adams, eventually to Reds Meadow via the High Sierra Trail. Yosemite permits say you need a permit for Donahue if you are EXITING in Yosemite (Happy Isles or Lyle Canyon). As we are doing a loop starting in Ansel Adams and ending in Ansel Adams, do we need a northbound Donahue permit?

You good. Your Agnew permit lets you into Yosemite park.

Special Donohue Pass permits are only needed if you are starting in Yosemite Park and exiting the park via Donohue Pass. That is, only for southbound hikers.

It may have changed this year, but when I checked in 2020, entering Yosemite Valley, e.g. Happy Isles TH, would invalidate your permit and require you to get a new one because you "left the wilderness." I even checked on this with a ranger that year. Any other location in the park is fine though, so I don't think it would matter for you even if it hasn't changed back.
