Sequoia/Panther Gap/Coyote

Spent the weekend up in Sequoia, snowshoeing up to Panther Gap where I stayed the night. Not much of a trip report to post, but I thought I'd share a few photos:

Arriving after the relatively short snowshoe in. Funny how I unloaded all my camera gear then hoisted my backpack back on for this shot, and how light my pack felt.


A little hair-raising walking out to this point...

A coyote alongside the higway begging for food. Unfortunately, the begging worked when a family of tourists tossed some food out for it ...lots more shots of this fella.


BTW, the wildflowers in the foothills along 180 were pretty incredible.

Hi Greg

Did you melt snow for water or was Wolverton Creek running, probably not?
Did you take the Alta Trail or the Lakes Trail?
How much snow at Panther(8400 ft), and how much at the Wolverton parking
lot?

Mav, took the Lakes Trail and I really didn't have the time to explore further beyond along the Alta Trail. Still a good deal of snow up there - had to melt snow for water as the creeks were completely snowed/frozen over. I'd guess there was a foot+ of snow at Wolverton, and more above. The south face at Panther Gap was still snow covered (one small dry patch), but a few bushes could be seen poking through the snow. There were signs of spring though, such as the bird behavior (lots of grouse calls), the snow seems in a transition between winter to spring, and in the middle of the night I heard a few big steps in the snow outside my tent - no footprints because the snow froze over at night, but my guess is that it was a bear.

Thanks Greg. I thought there would have been more snow since they said the southern
Sierra got 135% of average snow fall this year.
