Cora Lakes, Stevenson Meadow, etc.

Post by oleander »

Was anyone able to get into Stevenson Meadow last year from Isberg Trailhead? (And/or to do the short detour to Cora Lakes?)

There is still some language on recreation.gov and on the USFS website indicating some trails in the area area closed. (Some presumably from the 2020 Creek Fire.)

However, I wasn't sure that language is up to date. Called the Sierra NF and spoke to someone. She said the latest order has closed Cora and she is not sure about Stevenson. She is also not sure if that is "just a winter thing" (the order expires on Jan 20). If some of you made it to Cora and/or Stevenson in summer 2021, maybe indeed it is "just a winter thing" and I'd be able to get in in summer 2022.

The Forest Supervisors letter reads: "This Order will be effective from December 16, 2021, through January 20, 2022. I will consider terminating the Order early if conditions change." The order is in effect till Thursday, and will then expire, unless it gets extended. I do not believe you will have any issues getting into that area, unless another wildfire starts up in that are before your trip.
The last update from that area was in October: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=21972

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

I'm sorry it's so charred. That's devastating.

Guess I'll be getting back to Twin Island Lakes a different way. (Went through there on Sierra High Route in 2012)
