2021 Mosquito Reports

Shepherd Pass - 2
Some around Anvil Camp, largely limited to the timber.
Kern Headwaters (Lake South America and areas west) - 2
A few at LSA and other wet areas, not enough to put repellent on
Middle Kern (Kern-Tyndall Cutoff, lower Milestone creek, etc) - 3
Pretty bad in the timber but much improved in open areas.
Milestone basin - 1
For whatever reason, pretty much zero as soon as you exit the timber.

Pretty much 1-2 the entire trip. Low numbers and not very aggressive - never bothered me (loose quick dry pants, loose long sleeved baselayer shirt w/ sun hood sprayed with permethrin). Didn't use my headnet or made me wish I brought DEET.

Wright Lake basin 6/16 - 6/22 2021. 1
Wallace Lake 6/18 -6/20. 4 Clouds of them. Sent me back to Wright area. Surprisingly meadows below Wallace were a 1.

Interesting, I was only at Wallace lake itself for a few hours during midday on the 23rd and they weren't bad at all.

Were you the tent a bit up the hill below the southern lakes in the upper part of wright basin with the laundry line by the creek? We passed by on the 22nd if so.

There were some new cairns along the ridge below wales and wallace I destroyed.

Technically only a rain fly, but yep that was me. I was up at the lake at the base of Mt. Versteeg fishing that day. Belatedly "Hi."

Weird about the Wallace skeeters. I was wearing basically the same clothes you were, treated the same, plus DEET. Not many bites but clouds of them so thick I got tired of eating/breathing them when not using head net. This was the 20th. At one point my clothes looked like the "before" photo in a DEET ad.

June 22nd through June 26 hike in Yosemite.

Day 1: Yosemite Falls TH up to Porcupine Creek
Day 2: Down Snow Creek to Mirror Lake, along Valley Loop Trail to Happy Isles TH, JMT to Clouds Rest junction
Day 3: Up and back to Clouds Rest, then JMT to Sunrise Creek crossing
Day 4: JMT to Tuolumne Meadows

This is an easy mosquito report to write. It was a 1 all the way. A few flying around at dusk, particularly in the foresty campsite at Sunrise Creek, but “few” means “very few”. Never had so few mosquitos on an in-season trip in the Sierras . Also, never seen so little snow for a June trip

6/26/27: River Trail -> Garnet Lake (overnight) -> JMT -> Shadow Lakes Trail

All 2-3. Some spots worse than others. Garnet Lake only an issue at dusk.

FWIW met many who had been at Ediza Lake. They all reported 5/5.

This was just a day hike so I cannot report on dusk. I would give the skeeters a 2 rating but once you're away from water they go down to 1.

Generally present but successfully defended with permethrin-treated clothing. I used picaridin lotion at Rae Lakes and Junction Meadow, but slept out under the stars (cowboy-camped) at both locations without issue (no bug bivy needed).

Went from convict lake -> mildred -> dorothy -> genevieve.
Camped at dorothy, pleasant wind kept them at bay.
When the winds died down at sunset, they were a 2.
On the 27th on the north side genevieve, they were a 4.
