recreation dot gov overlapping permit dates?

Post by SSSdave »

What does recreation dot gov do when one has a secured wilderness permit reservation and attempts to add another with partially overlapping trip dates or even trips that start on the same dates? Is it ignored or does it inhibit further use on such dates? Web searching was not productive with myriad general permit info hits without addressing this specific situation. At least in 2019 it prevented doing so.

Weeks ago I secured a 3 person Sierra NF permit for Bear Creek but now one person has bailed due to new work commitments removing a key reason for that destination. Thus could cancel that trip and attempt to reserve another permit for a couple popular Eastern Sierra trailheads with only 2 week reservation walk-up's available. But don't want to cancel the BC trip first until I have a walk-up reservation secured since we might end up with no permits.

Dave,
The site does allow you to book multiple trips at the same time. Example: I had a Cottonwood Lakes permit for 16 days starting July 2nd. Then I booked a Cottonwood Pass permit for 16 days starting July 2nd before I cancelled the first permit.

Based on this experience I’d say they’ll let you book multiple trips that run during the same time period.

That is a useful feature and a good one as best I can tell as long as we are diligent in canceling the permits we don’t need.

It may depend on the forest/jurisdiction. I'm pretty sure over the winter when I was booking stuff I did run into issues with overlapping permits not being allowed. It was either SEKI or Inyo. I believe the 2nd permit did go into my cart, so I got the 15 minutes to then go and delete the 1st permit.

I have experienced being blocked by double reservations for campgrounds when using my dad's lifetime national parks pass (for a family trip with him present). I was trying to get a single site for 5 days and hadn't pre-planned, so wanted to keep multiple campsites in case some worked better than others with piecing together.

You also can't do it within SeKi for wilderness permits. I just went through to pull for an example, attempting a double booking on a date when I already have a permit in SeKi.

I got the same error trying to book an Inyo permit on a date I already have Inyo. But I did not get the error trying to book an Inyo permit on a date when I already have SeKi.

So, they do check for double booking in some circumstances.
