Ionian Basin Circle

Post by Harlen »

I just found a handful of new photos that my hiking buddy must've put onto my hidden zip drive. I looked at "New Posts," and didn't see any new TR's, so I thought I'd slip this in for summer inspiration. I am very keen to get back into the Goddard Creek country again. This week-long trip must've been 7 years ago. The route was: Florence Lake to Martha Lake-- into mythical Ionian Basin--up Black Giant-- across Muir Pass-- up Mt. Fiske-- down Evo. Valley-- up to an amazing lake due north of McClure Meadow-- back down, down to Goddard Canyon again, where I saw a very nice Black Bear-- and on to Flo. Lake and home.

Mt Scylla from Lake 11,818.

An Ionian Lake with Mt Solomons left, and Black Giant right. Another of the big lakes that sit just below the 12,000' contour in Ionian Basin.

View of the North Face of Mt. Charybdis-- such a wild mountain!

This doesn't feel quite right, but I believe this must be Lake 11,011 at the top of Enchanted Gorge, with the Three Sirens on the right.

Looking northwest from the summit of Black Giant, which I think of as one of the finest viewpoint peaks. You can just make out Muir Hut as the small black spot dead center, with Wanda Lake and Mt. Huxley lined up beyond. The favorite view east, across LeConte Canyon to the Palisades is missing-- I had to share my friend's fancy camera.

View south, with Mt McDuffie, and on down the Black Divide. Is that the amazing "Citadel" far to the left?

Looking north with Darwin and Mendel at the center, and Mt Humphreys in the shadowy distance.

My friend with a nice view of Davis Lake and Mt. McGee.

Back at Wanda Lake for sunset.

I remember this trip fondly, for the remoteness of Ionian Basin, the beauty of North Goddard Basin, The Black Bear who showed up just while I was cooking giant fish on sticks over a fire... all the Pika in the world in the rocks along the margin of the last Ionian lake- the one due west of Black Giant, and the brilliant view of Mt Charybdis from there! There was just one sweet and sour memory, and that was of the torrential downpour!, thunder and lightning that I escaped by racing down from Mt Fiske's summit along its very dicey east ridge-north slope, to the turquoise lake due north of Fiske. The huge raindrops/hail pellets were making the surface of that lake dance into a green foam! Such amazing sights and feelings that I almost didn't care that my tarp had blown off my sleeping bag, and now it weighed one hundred pounds or so! I rung it out, said goodbye to my friend, and hiked all the way down to 10,400' from Sapphire Lake, to make a big fire to dry out the bag. It worked out, and I slept fine. The next day the friendly McClure ranger invited me to fish at a secret lake only he knew of ;). That was great, and then I saw the blackest of Black Bears, sniffing for my fish. Sorry bear. Good luck this summer!

Amazing photos of one of my favorite areas. Thanks for posting.
Yeah, Lake 11, 011 is also known as Chasm Lake and it is at the head of Enchanted Gorge.

A haiku I wrote about the lake about 25 years ago-

Inky dark Chasm
hardly ever in sunlight
water blocking my way.

Hey Bill Finch,

A little computer bird told me that it is your Birthday today-- is that right? I hope you are celebrating happily, while you reminisce about Ionian Basin. You've had a few nice trips through there haven't you? And didn't you hike the Enchanted Gorge?
Cheers, and Many Happy Returns, Ian and Lizzie.

Thanks, Ian, for posting these pictures on my birthday and for your kind wishes.
I've always thought of my Enchanted Gorge Report, http://www.sierrahiker.com/EnchantedGorge/index.html , as the signature report of my website.

Just got three "walk-up" passes for trips into Dinkey Lakes to continue my flower study [Lewisia leeana].
Talked to gal in Prather that is unsure how passes are going to work out. Maybe there will be no such thing as walk-up passes any longer. No one seems to know. Recreation.gov would not give me more than three passes from the Willow Meadow trailhead. Maybe I can get special permission from the Sierra National Forest Botanist to spend additional time there this summer.

Thanks for sharing your photos.
Hope to visit there someday. Until then, experiencing it vicariously will have to do.

And that has made all the difference.

Ian

As you know this is bucket list goal terrain for me - unless the bucket leaks before then! However, I can't for the life of me find your lake in the first photo: Mount Goddard and Lake 12,080+ from the south.
Ummmmm...am I being a ditz??? Don't see where it is on CalTopo to match your contour level, nor the shape even for where Goddard is behind it???
I must be 'dazed and confused' thus can you please enlighten.

Ta much ~ M.

Goddard, Ionian Basin, areas close by...a multitude of route options, everything stunningly beautiful, a region you can visit multiple times and step maybe only once or twice where you had been before. I've been through twice and Chasm Lake was the common denominator. Bill, your haiku captures its essence.

As we, or maybe it is "as I" run out of time to explore every corner and be every place I've ever wanted to be, having lived a days worth of Chasm Lake's moods is something I'll always cherish. I've not seen it angry in a storm, but have beheld its joy...moonglow and sunrise, cloudless and cloudy, all day restfulness, and just passing through. I need just another 30 years. With that I can see all I (today) want to see AND visit Chasm Lake and Ionian Basin one more time.

My uncle Tim Timberlake was 93 the last time I visited with him shortly before he died. He had described and named more than 800 new species of bees and had more than 500,000 insects in his collection. He had worked as an entomologist for 60 years. One of his regrets was not having another 40 or 50 years to tie up the loose ends of his research.
I guess all of us who become interested in an endeavor, sooner or later, realize we just don't have enough time to do everything we want.
