I love using CalTopo for off trail trip planning. The fact they no longer have the google earth satellite/ aerial imagery is disappointing as naip and global imagery is not nearly as good.
I can spend hours just looking at maps and route planning what unnamed lakes I can camp at and peaks I can bag without much rock climbing.
I also use the fire history for morels, but the information's doesn't include 2020 and 2021 fires.
During the creek fire I kept checking the fire activity watching where i had backpacked the weekend earlier was burned away.

Caltopo still has the Google satellite imagery if you have a paid subscription.
