Ruby Mountains in Nevada

We're just back from a ten day trip to the Ruby Mountains in northeastern Nevada, with stops at the South Ruby Wildlife Refuge, Angel Lake, and Lamoille Canyon.

What a spectacular area! We loved the refuge--and lost count of the number of different birds we saw. Angel Lake (with hikes to Smith Lake and almost to Winchell Lake--gotta read the whole story) was wonderful.

But all of that paled in comparison to Lamoille Canyon and the hikes we took there: Thomas Creek, Island Lake, and Liberty Pass to Liberty Lake. Stunning scenery, more beaver ponds than we'd ever seen in our lives, excellent fishing, and did we mention spectacular scenery?

Yes, I love the Ruby Mountains, although I haven't been back since 1978! Hope it hasn't been overrun since then.

Really nice report. Over the years the Rubies have beckoned but the long drive always moved them down the priority list. Your report certainly raises my interest and puts it back on my radar.

Looks like a great trip, and sweet photos..... A few years ago my wife and I planned to spend a couple days in the Rubies, and we spent one nice afternoon at the back of Angel Lake where I caught some very pretty Tiger Trout.

Unfortunately, a dead car battery at the very end of Lamoille Canyon (which we were led to believe was a starter issue) caused us to abandon the day's hike and make a bomber run all the way home to the Central Valley without ever shutting the car off. But as you said, the canyon really is incredible and it's on our list of places to get back to one of these days.

Thanks for the report. This area is on my list. I've taken the turn in Wells a lot on the way up to Idaho and every time I just stare at that range as we approach.
