Advice for first Sierra backpacking trip (Mineral King)

I'll second just about everything SSSDave said except I prefer my full length lightweight hiking pants, as they are much lighter and dry fast enough to rinse them out every other day or more frequently. I would never go backacking without a rain jacket (or poncho). I just got back from a 7-day trip and was rained on a little each of the first 4 days.
