And this is why I mostly day hike in Yosemite. When you're taking a weeklong trip, I suppose it's fine to burn half a day getting a permit. For a weekend strike, I want to be hiking by 6am.
Hoover Wilderness, or Stanislaus/Sierra NF has much less red tape. They'll put the permit in the night drop box, or let you fill out your own at the trailhead.
