Edward Abbey Reconsidered

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Edward Abbey needs no introduction. An reexamination is more in order.

Last week a white supremacist killed 22 people, leaving behind a manifesto that mirrored much of Edward Abbey's own essays and interviews.

If you've actually read Desert Solitaire you can point to any number of instances of Abbey's peculiar and insensitive (at best) expressions of his own inherent superiority to anyone and everyone. It's clear he doesn't like people, and looks for ways to express his resentment and disgust at "others" who don't share his views.

Muir spends more of his time extolling the glories of God. Abbey scorns people.
