Front country cabin recommendations?

Hello. Does anybody have any recommendations for places in the Sierra with front country cabins that are near easy hiking trails in the summer? We will have an infant, so are looking for somewhere that we could stay that would insulate the sound of a crying baby from other campers and be near to easy nature trails. We were thinking maybe Yosemite, but thought the HST community might have some other good ideas. Thank you for your consideration.

I've never stayed in the Cabins at Tom's Place but the prices don't seem too bad. I have heard of them being referred to as "rustic" though.

There are considerable mountain rental listing online however most are down at lower elevation private land areas outside of national forests so are not going to be close to walk to hiking trails. Also most online listings are higher priced luxury listings since more wealthy people tend to be those who use such rentals.

Will highly recommend this resort if one can afford the $150 and up per night rates. It is a beautiful area along Bishop Creek at 9k with many hiking trails nearby.

Since your query was about a summer stay, here are three suggestions. These places are not exactly cheap, though they seem to be the current going rate. My wife and I stayed at both Parcher’s and Glacier Lodge in the past few years and liked both.

Parcher’s. Resort. South Lake and it’s many trails are a couple of miles up the road. Housekeeping cabins, which were quite nice.

Glacier Lodge: By the trailhead for North Fork of Big Pine Creek. Housekeeping cabins, a little funky when we stayed a few years ago.

Rock Creek Lake Resort Lodge (we’ve not stayed here, only eaten at the restaurant after backpacking trips). This is about a mile below the Mono Pass/Little Lakes Valley trailhead at Mosquito Flat.

Am I the only person who doesn't know what the term "front country" means?

For a family with an infant or small child, you may be interested in nearly any summer rental in Mammoth. We regularly did that when the kids were little and then took numerous dayhikes in the Mammoth vicinity. There are many trailheads within a 15-30 minute drive of Mammoth, and then restaurants, grocery store, and amenities for evening.

If you want to be within walking distance of trails, there are a number of lodges right on the lakes above Mammoth.

In summer lots of ski resorts have cabins for rent, and those are often near trails. Mammoth is an obvious option, but Kirkwood, Northstar, and Squaw Valley would also work. Plasse's near Silver Lake, Pinecrest off 108, and Lake Alpine on Highway 4 also have cabins. And there are cabins at Grant Grove in SEKI and Yosemite Valley tent cabins at Half Dome (aka Curry) Village.

You might be interested in a Wilderness Press guidebook called Hot Showers, Soft Beds, and Dayhikes in the Sierra, which is part hiking guide and part guide to cabins and other accommodations near the trailheads. Looks like the current edition is 2014, so it's not completely current, but it may have some useful suggestions for you.

ETA: I've never stayed at Silver City Resort near Mineral King, so I can't give a personal recommendation on the cabins, but the hiking possibilities near there are stellar.
