Lot's of people do this Solace-seeker. You can too.
A balaclava that covers your head and neck, ounce for ounce, is the most efficient and useful thermal protection. A simple REI fleece balaclava is one of my favorite pieces of gear. I've got a lighter synthetic balaclava that goes under that in winter. They're also available with synthetic or down fill. By taking up the space inside the hood of your puffy coat and sleeping bag, a balaclava seriously increases their thermal efficiency.
