I am super light-sensitive. I take a sleep mask with me all the time. You can get them for $1 at the dollar store. It really helps! But you guys would have to put up with "sleeping beauty" engraved on the mask!
As for melatonin production, it is very individual. I have a granddaughter (who has Angelmans syndrome) who has absolutely no melatonin production capability. She is on a regular melatonin supplement program. The melatonin sets her body clock to get to sleep, but does little to keep her asleep for 8 hours. So I think falling asleep and staying asleep are two different things. I have also heard that you can over-do the melatonin to the point of having the opposite effect. Sort of like they say you can get sleepy if you drink way too much coffee.
