I spent a couple of summers in Ullapool 35 years ago....and I've always wondered if there were any hiking trails there to explore if I went back...

Wow, nice photos of an incredible area and comically irreverent report. I was thoroughly entertained by the "meagre and sparse" bivvy. Cool trip!

Wow, what a marvelous post: the mountains, the flowers, the story. I was playing one of my favorite Schubert sonatas on my CD player as I read this. Really makes me want to go there. I have additional incentive, too. As a geologist I think spending time in the Alps is sort of a pilgrimage that I need to make. I've been on the periphery but never in heart of the range.

Spectacular and pretty civilized! And all those wildflowers. It could spoil you. I have never been to the Alps but read all those old climbing books in the 60's - I guess global warming has impacted the glaciers in the Alps too. If one were not into the civilized huts, could one simply put up a tent or is that illegal?

Schubert....more Trance for me alas.... :nod:

Regarding huts....the 'Alpine Bunk' makes me shiver with dread so whilst I embrace the convenience (aka: someone feeds you and sells you wine) I camp outside - this is pretty much tolerated; does depend where you are to an extent. National Parks or Reserves tend to be a bit sniffy about it......so wander a mile and bivouac anywhere with stealth.
