2016 Mosquito Reports

We only did a day hike through the area but it was about a 2 or 3 but sometimes the breeze kept them down. I had long sleeves and we used DEET. Some people we ran into said it was bad at dawn and dusk

Just got back from Courtright to Goddard Canyon trek via Hell For Sure pass. We noticed that the Mosquitos definitely worse at higher elevations.

June 30: Post Corral (camped on rocks about 200 feet from creek) - 2 (not that bad here!)

July 1 -
Trek from Disappointment Lake to Hell For Sure Lake we named "Murderer's Row" - super bad 4-5
Hell For Sure Lake: 3-4 (worse at dusk than dawn)

July 2:
Hell For Sure Pass: 3-4 (could not linger at the top to long as they began to congregate)
Goddard Canyon: 2

July 3: Lunch stop at Disappointment Lake we ran for our lives! Level 4-5

We had to use full strength Deet on any exposed skin a few times a day as nothing else worked.

Went up over Mono Pass to Pioneer basin July 1-3.

Mosquito Flat 3

Ruby Lake 2

Pioneer Basin 4-5 at the lowest marshy lake

Upper lakes were 1-3 depending on how close to the water you were

Fourth recess lake 2

We had a consistant light breeze throughout the trip, or it may have been worse in some areas. I also noticed a lot of young mosquitos in a few areas so I dont think they have hit their peak yet.

Went to Morgan Lakes through Little Lakes Valley July 1-3

We ended up cutting our trip short due to the bugs. As we were leaving Morgan Lakes, multiple people were heading to Morgan from Chickenfoot due to the mosquitoes being unbearable there. We have another trip planned in a couple weeks to that area. The weather forecast is for cooler temps in July, hopefully this will lessen the mosquitoes.

Baker Creek - due east of Cloudripper and Vagabond Peak - 3

Camped in a clearing next to the meadow due to having a decent sized group. Due to the meadow being basically a big marshy bog the skeeters were out but not as bad as they will be a bit later in the season. Varying breezes throughout Friday Night / Saturday helped as well. Went walking along the trail ringing the meadow Saturday morning and there were bits where the ground was frozen.

Ended up bailing Saturday afternoon and headed home due to my Son feeling crappy due to the elevation.

From Tuolumne Meadows to Tuolumne Pass: 1-4 (1 near the trailhead and 4 near the Pass)
From Tuolumne Pass to Vogelsang Lake: 4-5
Above 10,500': 0-1

The worst section was between about 9,500' and 10,500' - the area around the Vogelsang High Sierra Camp was really bad. I had to spray myself with Deet four times during the day - that's a lot for me.

From Florence lake to MTR, bugs ranged from 3-5....meadow areas were bad, making us hike faster!!
Near Senger creek, 2 on mosquitoes and was the area that had the least bug problem. Flies were also out but just bothered you.
Sallie Keyes to Heart lake, solid 3.
Selden pass, 1-2 because of the wind.
Marie lake, 3-4. Had to put on head nets and was the worst for bugs I have seen at a lake in awhile. Midge hatch was also happening and when you walked by a tree they were swarming by, they were attracted to you like a magnet.

Desolation Wilderness lollipop hike from/to Echo Lakes, July 3rd through 8th, 2016

2 to 3: Most lakes we stayed at or passed (Aloha, Susie, Lower Velma, Rubicon, Schmidell, Clyde)
There were decent numbers of mosquitos around, particularly within the trees, but not aggressive at all. Open areas away from trees had no mosquitos. It was pretty windy, which helped.

5: Particularly bad areas were the forested area on the trail south of Phipps Peak and the China Flat area on the Rubicon River.

We only had to apply DEET once, on the climb up towards Phipps Pass from the south. Otherwise, we were mostly left alone, particularly in exposed rocky areas. Mosquitos we did see outside of the bad spots generally ignored us.
