I had read pakoR’s report (
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=14232) about snow camping at Aloha and really got motivated to get out and explore the conditions in southern Deso.
Just as Markskor had reported conditions around Mammoth (Just a FYI to all those contemplating hiking up high in the next few weeks...I wouldn't, unless you really know what the hell you're doing.), the snow is still pretty deep up north as well.
The snow began in earnest at about 7600 feet.
By the time you get 1000 feet higher there is more than enough snow to dig a cave.
Here are some pictures showing conditions from the summit.
It looks like Rockbound Valley is free of snow and would be a fun destination right now.
But anywhere else where the snow is deep, it could become a “posthole hell” later in the afternoon.
The snow is melting fast and the waterfall, "Rocky Creek” is currently booming.
