Discussion about winter adventure sports in the Sierra Nevada mountains including but not limited to; winter backpacking and camping, mountaineering, downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, etc.
Headed up to Mammoth with my friend 1/2-1/4. We camped at Holiday camp at rock creek. Was planning to stay until 1/5 but left early due to winter storm warning for the big bear area where i live. As i type this now, its dumping outside
1/2 we hit up the Tele bowl, coverage was deep enough to ride, but seemed sketchy though didn't hit any rocks, except for the rock field we accidentally got into just before dropping into the bowl....uugghhh
1/3 we set out for TJ bowl, coverage was good with the new 6" of snow. Snowpack was deep, stable and consistent with the eastern sierra avalanche recent observations and recent pit profile at TJ.

best to come on a weekday, weekends are crazy when there is snow here. this is an old ski run in big bear, pm me for the location if you want to know. I don't want it getting all tracked out lol. I went back yesterday and it had been tracked out some.
Looks like deep powder...wow...well,i snowshoe so i wont be carving those runs,i just wanna be in that snow...at some point i will take up xc or at skiing...do u think there are good spots on hiway2?
there is really good terrain off the 2, which also means avy territory. lots of chutes and terrain traps. I have ridden from baden powell and throop peak last year. some snowshoe to baden powel, there are some slide paths on the trail up to bp so you gotta watch out.
DAVELA wrote:Thanks for the info...weekends are brutal for traffic...that run in ur video looks miles long, did u slog it up or take a lift?
its splitboarding and skinning up, no lifts, no resorts, no lift tickets i've been going over maps and recon hiking for months to ride these areas. so stoked! some of the areas need a bit more snow to fill and and when they do.......!!!!!
Hi Bt,im wondering about going snoshoing tomorrow off the 2...dont know jack about current conditions tho!Im coming from santa monica so the closer the snow, the better...if u have an idea, lmk where you think my best bet for decent coverage....thx
