High Sierra Topix

I know that most film photographers have always stuck to Velvia when shooting the sierras. Or at least that's what it seems like. I was wondering if anyone has used toe new Portra 400 in the back country. I am heading up to Miter Basin in a a few weeks and bringing my Mamiya 645 with me and probably a bunch of portra 400. I am very new to landscape photography so this will be my first real attempt in the sierras. just wondering what you guys think.

I've found choice of film to some extent depends on the camera and lens as well as your own sensibility. I use a Leica M with a 35mm Summicron, 90mm Elmarit M and sometimes a 50mm Summicron and find Velvia over-saturates the colors and so prefer Provia 100, which renders the colors more naturally. When I use my Nikon, it's a toss-up between Velvia 50 and Provia 100.

As to a Mamiya, I would do a test role of each if you have the time and come to your own conclusion. Every camera and lens has its own distinctive character.

So i ended up using the portra 400 on the trip i went on. Some of the shots i am super stoked on while others seemed to have some issues (user error) with the polarizer. Also, i wish i would have brought a wide angle for my mamiya. Ill have to post a few shots later!

I have used Portra 400, 35mm with a Canon A-1. I was really pleased with the results, but I can't compare to Velvia, which I have never used. Do you have some of your shots from the trip posted somewhere? I'd love to see some taken with the Mamiya.
