Curious what folks' favorite early season areas are? Looking to plan a trip from about 5/30-6/3 with minimal snow since we only have a bit of snow experience. We're exploring Lake Vernon/Hetch Hetchy or the area around Aloha Lake, but trying to find something that feels more like an adventure. Anywhere from 30-45ish miles would suit. Would love to know about your favorite early season spots! Thanks!

If you don’t like snow, anywhere with bridged/no creek crossings.
Kennedy Meadows north is a nice early option for Bay Area people. No cows yet, lots of bridges. I’ve enjoyed the south facing Kings Canyon trailheads too (Lewis Creek, Copper Creek). Not my favorite early season areas, but certainly ones that shine brighter early, compared to what they are late.

Lewis Creek and Kennedy Pass
05/05/2025 - A few downed trees before junction with hotel creek trail. Hikers may see the impacts of the 2024 Happy Fire in the area, including burned and dead trees. Learn how to stay safe in burned areas.

We have a section in our website that focuses on early season hikes:

As Maverick notes, the key is lower elevations and avoiding stream crossings.
