We backpacked from 7/21 to 7/24 and it was crowded. I strongly recommend, if you can, going in on a weekday. Mosquitoes were moderate in the day, vicious at dawn and dusk. There's a bear cruising the campsites, at night, halfway between Shadow Lake and JMT junction on the Shadow Creek Trail. He is testing the food storage. (We had Ursacks and other campers we met had canisters and no food was stolen, though it was definitely tested!!). This is based upon our experience and reports from other hikers.
Hope this is helpful and you have fun on this gorgeous trail!!
