Finding Users

I'm puzzled by the "members" lists: how are they organized? There is an alphabet that one may click on, but within each letter of the alphabet, the user names seem to be random, thought I haven't really looked hard for a pattern. At any rate, it certainly isn't alphabetic. I've thus found it pretty tedious to look for a user whose name begins with a common letter, because there can be pages and pages to look through. Is there some way to search for a particular user, given, say part of his name? For example, if I wanted to search for markskor but could only remember the "mark" part? Or, worse, if I could only remember the "skor" part?

The member list order is a bit cryptic - its default ordering is by registration date. You can search for posts by username - If you click the 'Advanced Search' link just below the search box in the upper right, the form on that page will have a 'Search for Author' field. You can use an asterisk for wildcards, so - using your example - if you remembered 'mark', you can search for 'mark*' and it should find all posts by members whose name match this pattern.

The Members list can be alphabetized by clicking on the Username heading. Click it once for A-Z and click it again to get Z-A. Likewise the list can be sorted by number of posts or date joined simply by clicking on those headings.
If you click on Find Members you get a plethora of options for searching or refining the list of members. Say you want the list of members to be restricted to those with more than 100 posts. Simply click on the Find Members and set the Posts to More than 100. Piece of cake. Want that list alphabetized - just click on the Username heading.
There's more flexibility in there than any reasonable person would want or need. To start your exploration, click on members (up in the upper right side of the page between FAQ and Logout).

Wow, thanks, Richard! I had no idea it was that flexible. What's strange (and wonderful) is that when you click on one of the headings, it sorts the *entire list* according to that heading, not just the page being viewed, so the behavior is intuitive when going from page to page. Excellent!
Thanks again for a very informative post.
