Disclaimer - there was a pretty constant wind/breeze most of the trip, so take the rating with a grain of salt. That being said, very thankful for that wind while going from Pine Lake to the Pass.

Trailhead to just beyond Lower Pine Lake - 1 maybe?
Lower Pine Lake to Pine Creek Pass - 2/3 at times
Royce Lakes - 0

4-5 the entire trip, they were everywhere. Manageable in the hot afternoon sun for a few hours but they come swarming at dusk. Got bitten 40-50 times, even with picardin.

2-3 for the trip but trending towards 4 if the wind was calm. Saw clouds of them rising in my wife’s wake as we left the lakes this morning, but was just enough breeze to keep them off our back.

Well done! Folks, that is how to do it during mosquito season. Bare minimal skin you tender naked monkeys. 100% DEET and they may lite but not stay long enough to bite. Though at level 4+ that can alone be a nuisance so head nets too. I stop when there are so many they fly inside my camera body.

1 to 2: Light during the day in the Dana Fork valley, and light during the dusk and dawn hours below the southwest side of Kuna Pass where there are streams. Zero in between (Spillway, Helen, Kuna Pass), maybe because the winds were strong.
