We couldn’t stand them and turned around, maybe better past 10k feet, but it didn’t seem like there was an end in sight. Worse up high at 8-9.7k feet.

Gianelli TH to Granite Lake: 1, spray only
@Granite Lake: 2, late evening and morning only
0 during the day

We didn't use anything besides normal spray and little Deet. I had hiking clothes treated with Permethrin which helped deter them from touching down in the evening and morning.

A day hiker from Wire Lakes said they were fierce there.

6/29 - 7/7

Virtually no mossies on the eastern sides of Sawmill and Taboose Passes.

Level 2 in the high basins west of those passes.

Level 3-4 in the worst places along our route, which were the basin under Window Peak; the basin under (east) of Arrow Peak, and on the Bench Lake terrace; and in all of the Lake Basins-- (Lake, Dumbell, and Amphitheater); in the high basin (11,500') under Split Mtn; and the lake basin under Striped Mtn. Could've reached level 5 at times!

Head-nets helped a lot, Eric lost his bushwhacking, and so he got mine, and I resorted to heavy deet use, which worked like a charm, but now I will surely die young.
