Backpacking Sabrina Basin

Headed to Sabrina for 6 days/ 5 nights with 2 people.

Plan to spend the first few nights at Sailor Lake area. (near treeline)

I can't quite get all of the food into 1 can.

It seems as if INYO regulations don't require bear can in Sabrina Basin, so I could supplement my can with a Bear Bag Hang.

I have hung food before and have a good setup, but I am not sure if there are any trees large enough that high in the Basin.

At what elevation does a Bear-Bag-Hang become impossible due to small trees in Sabrina Basin?

I am thinking about stopping on my way up to Sailor Lake maybe near Dingleberry Lake and hanging a bag there with the stuff I can;'t fit in my can, and pick it up 3 days later.

Any suggestions?

You don't need your food for the first day/night in the can.

Have you repackaged your food? There must be 47 different tricks to getting it into the can... Do you want the list of techniques?

Heading up after labor day, curious if i should go somewhere further south to avoid smoke. Bishop web cams look pretty smokey every afternoon.

I agree as far as limited spots around HP. Some good spots just above Moonlight. Topsy Turvy, although small, is gorgeous in the morning still air. We found a few spots in its vicinity.

I just came back from there. Lots of people in the area from Dingleberry down.

It was excellent 8/20-23 when we were up there. Could see nasty brown-ness down in Owens Valley, but very nice up high. When we came down on the 23rd, the valley was a lot better too.

I recommend the climb of "Picture Peak" from Hungry Packer Lake for a day hike. The route becomes kind of intricate up high; to reduce the exposure, I circled around on a ledge from the Northeast face to summit from the southeast, but it was easy climbing. Another great day hike is to hike above Midnight and Blue Heaven Lakes to view the immense eastern wall of Mt Darwin. All the best, have a great trip.
