I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Re: 2017 Fire and Smoke Impact Reports / Maps
The exploding Detwiler fire now at 75 square miles is burning highly inflammable dry chaparral areas south of McClure Reservoir that have burned before in recent decades. Those chaparral areas are interspersed with considerable cattle grazing ranch lands. In the last few decades, real estate corporations have been very active selling land in those areas to urban people building second homes. The societal insanity much like in Southern California areas that yearly make fire news, is that enforcement of building codes for protection against fires is inadequate with the hidden agenda of not bothering people who already own property many of who are barely scratching out a rural life, and keeping home construction costs cheap using wood that of course benefits the real estate corps trying to sell land.

Web cam video on Facebook from China Peak yesterday. Gives you an idea of what conditions will be like up above Edison or Florence lakes.

Here's a simple GIF I made from MODIS imagery showing the direction of the smoke plume. If anyone is interested I will update when available.

We have Half Dome/Cloud's Rest permits this weekend - does this fire make it useless to go? My group is pushing to go to Yosemite as the park is tweeting that it's open but I worry that the fire spreads and we get stuck when it's time to leave.

I have a permit for Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne for this weekend and I've decided to bail. The river was my biggest concern, but it's currently at safe levels. But the smoke from this fire is dense. Breathing it at altitude while exercising isn't healthy.happycamper0313 wrote:We have Half Dome/Cloud's Rest permits this weekend - does this fire make it useless to go? If anyone has firsthand accounts of the Yosemite high country right now I'd love to hear from them.

Re: 2017 Fire and Smoke Impact Reports / Maps
nasvik- although it is tedious, the NWS forecasts show smoke areas. Just click on a location and you will get smoke alerts. Lower elevations both west side and east side show smoke alerts, a band at higher elevations, south of Mammoth, seem to be better. Of course forecasts are just that- can change any time. Also, the east side web cams show some haze in Owens Valley. Yosemite valley web cams show lots of smoke.
