As of yesterday (Mon 8/20), the air near the Minarets was pretty dismal. The Lion's fire continues to grow with (to my eye) the major smoke now coming from the east side of Iron Mountain. See https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5850/ for more info.
Here are a couple of snapshots taken from the Mammoth Crest along the Deer Lakes trail at about 8:30 a.m. Monday morning. You can see all the smoke in the vicinity of the Minarets. I would avoid that area for a while.

Spent Saturday (8/18) thru Monday (8/20) in Desolation, hiking from Meeks Bay to Rubicon Lake. Light haze on Monday AM, but other than that, not bad.

The lightning caused North Bubbs Creek Fire was discovered on August 1, 2018 burning approximately three miles east of the Roads End Permit Station north of the Bubbs Creek Trail in the Cedar Grove Area of Kings Canyon National Park.
Firefighters are using a confine and contain strategy through the use of minimal impact suppression tactics (MIST) to limit the fire’s spread. This helps to preserve wilderness character by using natural barriers such as rock outcroppings, creeks, and even trails. Visitors should expect to see flames, smoke, and firefighters in the area.
Note: There are no trail closures at this time. All permitted wilderness trips will be allowed to continue as long as the trail remains open. Firefighters will provide escorts through the area as warranted to maintain visitor safety and access to the Sequoia-Kings Canyon Wilderness. For wilderness permit questions, please call 559-565-3766.
The fire started high on the cliffs, slowly spreading downslope in a backing fashion, and is now along the Bubbs Creek Trail. The fire is estimated to be about 50 acres and has about 3,200’ of vertical relief, making many areas inaccessible to direct suppression.
Smoke may be visible or smelled from the Bubbs Creek Trail, Roads End, or other near-by upslope areas.
