I'm surprised this surfing thing is even being debated. Everyone that's surfed Malibu knows, it's arguably the world's most crowded wave. And to make matters worse, it's a point break, meaning everyone waits for waves in one single spot in a massive herd. You can't even escape the Malizoo crowds at night, surfing by the light of the moon.
As most coastal Californians have probably noticed, surfers have been doing an abominable job of social distancing. Most surfers tend to have a sheep mentality in the lineup, and that hasn't waned during this pandemic. If someone wants to do some exploring and surf some lonely, remote wave all by their lonesome, that's not an issue. But if someone wants to try to score a solo session in Malibu because everyone's been ordered away, they should hopefully realize there's a cost to that.

Italy's elderly population is not significantly higher than Germany's yet the death rate in Italy is MUCH higher. This isn't just an "old person's" problem.
And the death rates in nursing homes and (now) cruise ships is truly horrifying. Yes, those are elderly populations. But that's no reason to discount this virus and its impacts on our families and our friends.
Death by coronavirus is really an old person's problem. 96% of deaths have been people over 60, 80% of those have been people over 70. For the 20 and younger crowd, it's as close to 0% as you can get.
And with Germany vs Italy...consider this. Before the 2008 financial crisis, Italy had one of the highest number of hospital beds per-capita in the developed world. Then, the financial crisis caused Italy to nearly go into default. They were "rescued" by EU bailouts, but at the cost of forced "austerity" measures that required the Italian government to gut and fillet its health care system. Now, Italy has a second rate health care system. Same thing happened to Spain.
Oh, and here's the kicker. When Italy and Spain were borrowing like crazy, they were borrowing from German banks. When the crisis hit, Germany was at the forefront, demanding no aid to Italy or Spain unless they gutted public spending, including health care. And guess what happened to all the money Italy and Spain saved by spending less on health care? You guessed it: funneled to German banks.
Gotta love them Germans. As a nation, they're the best ghouls the Devil has ever spawned.

I beg your pardon?? 60 is old!!

From where I stand, 60 seems quite young!
At this point, a big issue is reducing the spread of the virus, and young people also get it and even if mildly, they spread it. If younger people were not concerned, they would not be protesting about work conditions, such as at Amazon warehouses. A "mild" case may be less than death, but can be highly miserable and the 20% hospitalization rate is pretty scary. We are all in this boat together, so let's all row together, each at their own best capability. I cannot control ineptness of governments, economic inequality, or old animosity between countries/cultures, but I can certainly control what I do right now.
Although we old folks bear most of the health impacts, this "lock-down" impacts day-to-day life for my children and their families a lot more than me. Frustrates me that I cannot go and physically help them.

Right on... a lot of snot and pee in that lineup for sure!

Plenty of heartless ghouls here in the USA too. Just turn to one particular channel on TV, you know which one.

P.S. I see two Riverside cops died of COVID-19, ages 49 and 51.

Just looking at the hard statistics, true, there is a very small probability that a person younger than 20 is going to die of coronavirus. For the tiny percent who DO die (and their families), statistics are meaningless, as the newspaper articles show.
Is not calling the virus is an "old person's problem" is a bit cold hearted? It is not about me or you, but about public health. The medical personnel who are dealing with the tragedy have far greater odds of getting it- they are really struggling now. Reducing the spread with a lock-down is really necessary, at this moment. The reason we are at this moment, is that we failed to prepare for something that was inevitable and predicted years ago. Now we get to eat our lump of coal, hopefully become prepared better for the next one.
