Excellent! I hadn't thought of that (as you obviously knew )! Very cool. I have to admit, though, that calculating exactly where (besides the "inside-the-box" answer) this could happen would require more thought than I'm willing to give it on a Sunday night...

Um... well... it was a good idea, but he does shoot the bear. Now, I suppose one could conceive of various peculiar ways a bear might somehow have managed to get to the alternate location you're thinking of, but they're all pretty improbable. I think the answer I had in mind is actually pretty safe

I just spent a few minutes searching the internet for some constants, and worked up the numbers on a scientific calculator, and I have the answer, subject to the rounding error on my calculator.

Working with cosines out to 10 decimal places leaves my head reeling... :retard:

There are actually a few more locations where it could occur, if you want to circumnavigate the earth two or three times... I'll leave that math to others.

Start at 89 degrees, 58 minutes, 59.543 seconds SOUTH, at any longitude. Walk 1 mile south to 89 d, 59m, 51.717s south. If my math is right, the distance is 1 mile around the earth along that parallel of latitude .
