Re: Trail Riddles
Steve and Mary are found dead on the kitchen floor. The floor is wet and there's broken glass all around them. The kitchen window is open.
Who are Steve and Mary and how did they die?

Re: Trail Riddles
If a yellow house has yellow bricks, a blue house has blue bricks, and a red house has red bricks, what color bricks does a green house have?

Re: Trail Riddles
The correct answer is:BSquared wrote:OK:
A guy hikes one mile due south, then one mile due east, at which point he shoots a bear.
He then walks one mile due north, returning to his point of origin.
What color was the bear?
Impossible to tell from the facts given. There is more than one place on Earth where that can occur (Yes, there is! Think outside the box.) And polar bears are not native in the other location.

Re: Trail Riddles
Um... well... it was a good idea, but he does shoot the bear. Now, I suppose one could conceive of various peculiar ways a bear might somehow have managed to get to the alternate location you're thinking of, but they're all pretty improbable. I think the answer I had in mind is actually pretty safeBSquared wrote:Excellent! I hadn't thought of that (as you obviously knew)! Very cool. I have to admit, though, that calculating exactly where (besides the "inside-the-box" answer) this could happen would require more thought than I'm willing to give it on a Sunday night...

Re: Trail Riddles
I just spent a few minutes searching the internet for some constants, and worked up the numbers on a scientific calculator, and I have the answer, subject to the rounding error on my calculator.
Working with cosines out to 10 decimal places leaves my head reeling... :retard:
There are actually a few more locations where it could occur, if you want to circumnavigate the earth two or three times... I'll leave that math to others.
Don't scroll down if you want to work it out yourself.

Start at 89 degrees, 58 minutes, 59.543 seconds SOUTH, at any longitude. Walk 1 mile south to 89 d, 59m, 51.717s south. If my math is right, the distance is 1 mile around the earth along that parallel of latitude .
