Almost every neighborhood, east, south, north or west shore has a road that dead ends to a trail on USFS land.

The eastern sierra has some of the best access to the high sierra and everything else is not far. Depends what you want out of your experience. Housing is super tough right now and it's very competitive. The real estate environment has changed a lot in the last couple of years with everyone discovering the "outdoors' and the "eastern sierra". Mammoth is the place you want to be for sure :)

With Starlink that should be a solved problem. Not cheap, but if it works as well as people report, it might be worth it.
