I am so sad because I have not been able to hike due to this relentless heat and smoke! Last year and this year are first years EVER, that I could find no where to go. I could always hike somewhere, it was just a matter of how far I would drive.
My asthma just doesn’t allow me to deal with the smoke. I was hoping for an October trip, my my hopes are fading with the new fires in sequoia. SIGH.

There is great camping with great views at Marie Lake on the OPPOSITE side as the PCT. I have camped there twice and it is NOT crowded. JMT and PCT hikers will not get off the trail that far. Then you could easily day-hike to Melody other lakes.

I can’t sit to get up there this year! You are right about the PCT/JMT folks not going off trail. I met several of them last year going over Piute Pass and down Piute Canyon. Most of those I met did not even carry maps!
