A friend and I in the late 70's were going into Hoover. He decided his pack was too heavy and cached half his clothes in the bushes along the trail. On the way out, he/we couldn't find it. That is how one loses gear. Nice Pendleton lost as well in that debacle.
As a fisherperson, my most problematic losses are losing a Z-Ray.

Speaking of nice Pendletons, I got a really nice one for Christmas when I was 13 years old. I took on my first Sierra backpacking trip and every single other BP trip until about 5 years ago when I decided to retire it. It now hangs in my closet.
