Daisy, I think you're in the minority with always wearing full gaiters. Full gaiters aren't required for a Sierra trail hike in late September, at least in the conventional sense where they are for keeping snow out of your boots or reducing abrasion on your lower legs.
Mr. Buddah wants to use them because he's worried about snow getting into his running shoes. But if there's ever a place for a short gaiter it's with a low top shoe.
