So is the High pressure system moving in likely to reverse the dynamic of horrible air NE of the fire (Mammoth/Bishop) and decent air SE of it (Whitney)?

Just looked at these forecasts for 300 millibar winds (about 32k feet) for the next 5 days.

http://virga.sfsu.edu/crws/jetstream_fcsts.html

Each day the higher elevation winds over the range are either weakly west to east or northwest to southeast. With higher temperatures lower elevation winds are more likely to be a daily cycle of up canyon winds due to the expansion of valley air masses with night sumping flows down canyons from highest shaded crest and ridge line areas. So does not appear there will be much mixing with the tendency of stagnant air more likely to become more smoky and hazy. Basically will continue to be one of the lousiest late summers for air quality until a real cold front finds its way down our coast.

I'm heading out this Friday and trying to decide between Upper Kern and Hoover/Northern Yosemite.

Upper Kern is closer, but southeast from the Rough Fire. Using the EOSDIS Worldview, it looks fairly clear on most days of the last 2 weeks.

Northern Yosemite is father than the Rough, but closer to Walker and (now perhaps a concern) Tenaya Fire. And the smoke for all fires seems to have been moving in a northeastly direction.

Or maybe I should go to Emigrant? Or not go at all?

I'd appreciate any tips but really I'm just venting. Really, who knows which way the wind blows?

I'm heading out tomorrow, and ya...definitely have to keep an eye on the forecast. I've been checking Bishop every day for the last week or so and it was always tolerable--maybe a couple of hours with smoke concentrations of about 100 ug/m3. Tomorrow's forecast? 600+ ug/m3!

Just finished the High Sierra Trail. Had good air quality after bear paw.

Sounds promising.

I'm considering heading to Upper Kern Basin tomorrow.

Afternoon air was OK in the Kern?

Thanks for the update.

it was a little hazy but nothing to worry about. However, if the wind changes to a northern flow, it will degrade quickly.

70% contained now....the rain really helped.

I read that the Kings Canyon Lodge burned down. I guess that's the place with the "Ice Cream Here" sign I've noticed a few times, thought about it, and always decided to keep going to Grants Grove instead. From the Yelp reviews, it looks like:

1. I dodged a bullet, and
2. Karma's a ****! :D
