But if you are emailing to get a permit how do you know the number in advance? Or am I missing something here?

If you are emailing to get a new permit, then by definition you do not have a permit number.
If you use recreation.gov to make a reservation for a permit, then you have a permit number.

I have a permit for Sabrina Lake entry in late August but I need to cancel. I thought I could cancel it on Recreation.gov but didn't see a way to do so. Am I just not seeing it on the website? Or do I need to call the ranger to cancel?

I canceled a reservation that I had for Cottonwood Lakes on August 6. Go to Recreation.gov, log in, Reservations, then Reservation Details. There should be an option to Modify or Cancel under View Receipt.

Yeah, that's what I thought...maybe I'm dense, but I cannot find an option to cancel the permit in the "Reservation Details" or "Receipt" pages. I know I've cancelled a reservation on recreation.gov in the past. Hmmm

The "Modify | Cancel" option should be on the right-hand side of the "Reservation Details" page, immediately below the section showing the entry date, exit date, and amount paid. I'm on there right now because I'm composing the email to request a permit from my reservation for Big Pine Creek North Fork.

Bishop_Bob, a thought just occurred to me. I see now that you said permit rather than reservation. Maybe the Modify | Cancel" option disappears once the permit has been issued. Going back to one of my completed trips on recreation.gov I see that there is no "Modify | Cancel" option.
