A Place to Store Backpack at Tuolumne Meadows?

Another thought. The stables in TM store packages for people who hike the high camp loop trail. The deal is that they can ship things from the high camps back to the stables for a fee (so they won't have to carry it on the trail). Maybe they'd store a bp for you.

yes, very possible. If you're moving as fast as your day 1 plans suggest, you will probably catch up with us on the southern half of the trail as we are still heading south. We'll be right on the JMT starting around Bear Ridge, so unless you're extremely fast, you should not miss us while we're doing some alternate routes on the way south.

We're not going to keep the same mileage throughout the trip, we're have 3 weeks and want to spend our time and enjoy the scenery along the way. We're only planning on covering that much distance the 1rst day because our permit starts at TM, and the idea of hiking YV to TM without packs does sound appealing. Have done this section of the JMT so many times that I don't feel like I'll be missing much in not taking our time.

We will be leaving Whitney on July 23, so it looks like we ought to cross paths around the 20-22.

My hiking partner (Russ) and I are really excited. I've wanted to do this hike since I was a kid.

The part from the valley to TM has never been one of my favorite sections. After doing it twice in the late 80s, I haven't been back there since. However, it's now been long enough and there's that full yo-yo idea, so we really have to include it. On the way north we will go over Clouds Rest and then perhaps out via Glacier Point and the 4 mile trail, adding some variation.

If our trip goes as planned, we should be North of Glen Pass when we cross paths. Look for an adult with two unusually young hikers that will look pretty worn out at that time.

I know what you mean - if were to bring still cameras, I'd be hauling a lot more weight as well. Being more a still photo guy, I don't feel the need to haul the pro video gear - it's never going to be as good as stills. Prirotiy is that the kids complete their hike, not that I get some sort of Discovery Channel program out of the trip.

And what the little camera does, is pretty darn good (link needs Flash 10, and the more bandwidth, the better)
