Recreation.gov permit question

The same thing happened to me last year on a campsite reservation. I needed to make a last minute cancellation and was unable to on the day of / the next day / and the next day. Apparently the campsite went unused. The unavailable reservations and wilderness permits from noshows and late cancellations is pretty outrageous. The state park system has been so bad for noshows that it has been in the news. On top of that many campgrounds have been closed for several years because of deferred maintenance.
