Daisy...I can relate to TH destination choices being subject to the price of gasoline. When I left Ukiah for my recent trip I paid $5.19 a gallon and thought I was getting gouged. I revised that evaluation after seeing a Chevron station on 395 charging $8.23 a gallon. Filling up over there in the 395 corridor was a 'sobering' experience! However, the ease of traffic v. my more usual 580 and 99 'traffic-mare' eased the irk considerably.
Golly your Emigrant photos are gorgeous. Looks like a stupendous area for early and late season trips (re the lesser elevation). What a pity it is out of my "go zone". Thanks though for a vicarious trip c/o your, as ever, rich report.

If I only did a few trips each year the price of gas would not be a big consideration. But I spent a load of $$ on gas to Wyoming and did three Sierra trips this spring too. Gas yesterday in Fair Oaks, at a cheaper station was $5.95/gal.
Yes, my back is fine now. Never had that kind of pain before. I now swear by "backpack therapy"! I spent so much of my life without health insurance that I learned that my body tends to heal itself much of the time.
I am posting an old 2008 trip report that I did about the same time of year (last week Sept), to some of the same areas. It is interesting that things look quite the same, in spite of this year being overall much dryer. I was younger in 2008 and put in many more miles for the same length trip. Well, I am still glad to be backpacking, regardless of how many miles I put in.

Enjoyed the trip report.
I also really enjoyed thinking about this area in late season.
It seems that I too have always been here in early season, and I consider it one of the worst areas for mosquitoes in the Sierra.
Your pictures make it look like October is quite nice..without the bugs.
On Latora, I can tell you a friend told me he caught an 18 incher there..but that is the last report of a big fish..and it was..um.. a long time ago..
I think... 1972. Oh well. This always has been a great area for fishing, and there are lots of different lakes to choose from.
