tahoefoothills, and Gary, thanks for the compliments, but as for "the skill set required to..." do these wintery trips, it can be as easy as getting the right gear for it. Warm footgear is key--something rated for very low temps, like Sorrell boots with the felt liners, and then a pair of snowshoes. Just those things, plus the warm layers of clothing, get you out there in comfort. The only other key items are a good tent, and a warm sleeping set up... and I suppose a few important details like good snow glasses. There are so many safe and easy areas for winter backpacking, which don't have avalanche risk, or scary steep slopes. We took our boys as toddlers, and even carried them before they walked, out snow camping at Dewey Point (YNP), and many times into Rock Creek/Little Lakes Valley on the east side. I'd say if you like the look of it, give it a try.
