The telemarketing companies would spoof the SAR identifier. Then when you are lost you would get phone calls about your expiring car warranty...
That would be incredibly illegal. Those companies would be instantly prosecuted and shut down. Goes beyond fraud into reckless endangerment.
What makes you think some telemarketing scammers based in Ukraine or Venezuela care about being prosecuted?

Well I'm gonna suppose that the "hiker" didn't consider himself "lost" but merely delayed for a while (albeit after his itinerary timeline). How would he know that SAR is out looking for him and then, logically, if his phone was obviously working and he wanted help, he would have called for help. And, maybe the person worried about him could've called him, just sayin. :)

And to complicate things, I'd also suppose that the news release is either missing facts or altered some.

So, where do you get your current information? How do you form and support your opinions? What exactly is "the media?" Can you define it for us?

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.
