Echoing what others have said, the Tamarack trail is overgrown and not maintained. That said, it's a beautiful hike for its lovely views of Tahoe, Fallen Leaf, and Tallac. Definitely easier on ascent than descent (so much so that this year I opted to go x-country down Angora rather than circle back to the trail). That said, if you're comfortable with some trail finding and some slick conditions, go for it.
Miles shouldn't be a problem on the trip. Glen Alpine is a fast trail and once you start hitting the lakes, it's lovely. I'd make a side trip to Echo Peak if you have time. Also fun to scramble up to Mt. Price. Lake of the Woods also a gem that I highly recommend.
