How is Alta Peak right? Is it passable without winter gear?
Also, what is the situation with the water sources up there (Mehrten and Alta Meadows)?

Re: Alta Peak
There is a spring that crosses the trail just after the junction of the Peak/Meadow trails, that seems to run all year - You may have to go up the wash a little ways to find it, but there's reliable water. Another spring crosses the trail right before the meadow, and that has been running in fall when I have been.
You will likely find patchy snow on the way up to the peak, but it's south facing and probably melting faster than most other areas out there. None of the trail is really steep tho.

I was up at Pear Lake last weekend. Snow covered most North facing areas above 9,500. Snow was touching the lake all the way up to the peak, or at least I think it is Alta Peak that towers over pear lake. Here's a shot from last weekend (5/2/15).
