first significant Sierra snows forecast
NWS forecasts now coming to consensus of the first significant winter storm across the Sierra by next Wednesday morning. Thus any of you late season backcountry users, please pay attention.

There was the modest storm putting white across the range last week however was shallow enough the still warm ground temps easily have melted most of that off by now. The coming storm may seal off highway passes and major high country surface areas for the winter. Too early at this point to have confidence of any numbers. In a few past years we have seen late October multi foot storms that opened up Tahoe resort skiing for the rest of a winter. Already have my Epic Tahoe Local Pass and gear primed.

Same here. One more weekend trip. It looks like Saturday will cool off compared to today, and Sunday will be a quite a bit cooler than Saturday.

Awww, rats. Too slow on the trigger and we're gonna miss this weekend. The snow drought begat complacency...
That said, here's hoping for a very snowy winter season.

Last night on NBC national news, it was reported that NOAA expected a warmer and drier year (than normal) in the western USA. Mention was made regarding the exacerbation of the drought in western states and they had a graphic...

Re: first significant Sierra snows forecast
From the NWS:.MUCH COOLER AND WETTER WEATHER EXPECTED EARLY NEXT WEEK WITH HIGH ELEVATION SNOW IN THE SIERRA PASSES...
A STRONG EARLY SEASON STORM IS EXPECTED TO IMPACT EASTERN CALIFORNIA AND WESTERN NEVADA BY MONDAY... BRINGING GUSTY WINDS... RAIN AND MOUNTAIN SNOW... AND MUCH COLDER TEMPERATURES. THE HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE WEST COAST THAT BROUGHT AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF ABOVE AVERAGE TEMPERATURES WILL BREAK DOWN THIS WEEKEND... AS A COLD LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IN THE GULF OF ALASKA APPROACHES THE WEST COAST.
RAIN AND SNOW ARE POSSIBLE FROM SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH NEXT THURSDAY... WITH THE BEST CHANCES FOR HEAVIER PRECIPITATION MONDAY AND MONDAY NIGHT. SNOW LEVELS MAY DROP AS LOW AS 4500 FEET NORTH OF INTERSTATE 80... AND 5000-6000 FEET SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 80 BY MONDAY NIGHT. MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED TO IMPACT THE SIERRA PASSES MONDAY AND MONDAY NIGHT.
