R03/R01 TR: Taboose to Split to Sill to Big Pine Creek 2024

Post by C_S »

Long time lurker. Warming weather and melting snow has me thinking of High Sierra adventures so I figured I'd relive one from last summer by sharing it here.

For some reason my cousin and I think it's a great idea to do the big East side passes. Summer of 23 it was Shepherd so we decided summer of 24 to give Taboose a go. I figured since we were in the area we should tackle a couple 14ers and finally get up to the Palisades Crest and exit via the South Fork of Big Pine Creek.

This is likely the one and only time I'll do Taboose Pass, not because it was all that tough, but mostly because the road in takes forever. Hah.

DAY 1

Plan is to get an early start (we hit the trail at 5:30) to get up high and out of the heat and camp at a lake below the approach to Spit Mt.

Desert starts begit desert sunrises

The trail wasn't too bad. Overgrown in a couple spots. In one the trail basically turned into a creek bed. But overall it was ok. Just continuous up up and up with the views getting better and better as you go.

Crossed the creek a couple times, this was the only one memorable enough for a pic

And then you are in the upper basin

And then, there was the pass. Took us right about 6 hours. We were happy with that as we weren't in a huge hurry.

A whole new world unfolded to the West

Image

And a great spot for lunch

Image

From the pass the plan was to stay high along what looked like some benches so we didn't drop down to the JMT. At least initially. What started off as pleasant cross country turned not so pleasant....

Image

At this point we just said eff it and angled down towards the JMT. Once we hit it we stayed on it just under3 miles and branched off toward Split just as thunder threatened above.
And just like that 7 years of adventuring in the Sierra with perfect weather was done with as we got a nice little rain.

Just as we found a nice little lake to camp at the rain stopped and the sun came back out and we were treated to an amazing Sierra light show.

Whoops. Just noticed title has year of 2023. It was actually 2024. Any way to edit that?

Days 2 and 3 forthcoming....

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Looking forward to the rest of the report. Your photos of Taboose canyon are very good. I chuckled; years ago when I went in to climb Split Mountain I also tried to traverse over from the pass and ran into exactly the same boulder mess you did, forced dropping down anyway. Short cuts often do not work as intended.

You made great time to the top of Taboose. The desert sunrise photo is a great start, looking forward to the rest.

Day 2

We got Alpinish start, around 645, and headed up up and up to Split Mt.

Up thataway. With lots of talus in store.

Image

When the views of endless talus in front got us too dismayed, an about face of the views behind buoyed the spirits

Image

Image

Image

We stashed our tents and bear cans and grabbed the last bit of water for the final push

Image

Image

There were sorta trails here and there but it was a slog in the ever thinning air

Image

Looking down the St Jean couloir. Had me wanting to come back from the East in late April to give it a ski.

Image

Last little bit to the summit and amazing views

Image

Image

Had a quick bite to eat then headed down down down to get up and over Mather Pass and then up towards Cirque Pass to set us up for Mt Sill (which we could see so very very far away) on Day 3.

Image

It was so delightful to get off the talus

Image

Caught the JMT right at the bottom of Mather. Felt so nice to be on trail the pass felt like a cruise

Image

Tomorrow's objective taunting us way out yonder in intimidating majesty

Image

The whole way down I was staring at this wall that was our approach to Cirque pass and for the life of me could not figure out how the hell any of it was passable.

Image

It started raining again as we reached the base of the wall at the lowest Palisades lake. JMT peeps were all setting up camp as I was stressing on how to get up. We almost just said eff it and camped at the bottom but I wanted to check out a possible ascent on the far left. What looked impassable and cliffed out from below turned out to be a delightful granite ramp (foreshadowing for the entire next day. Hah)

Image

Rooms with a view

Image

Image

And just above us with promises of more route finding fun on the morrow

Image

Up next: Day 3. Talus!

Hah. In planning the route it looked so nice and quick on the topo map.
