Hip Belt Pockets

Post by oldhikerQ »

Has anyone here added hipbelt pockets to their pack that has a large padded hipbelt? Looking at a Kelty or something similar (Dana Design, etc).
The 2 inch web portion of the belt is sewn in very near the termination of the padded portion of the belt, so there is no way to fit a pocket between the padded section and the buckle. Unless I gain 75 pounds or so.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Create your own new hipbelt pocket. Make a loop that goes around the belt to your own dimensions. If you can't sew, you are in trouble.

I have thought about sewing vertically oriented sleeves on the back of a pocket and passing sewn elastic loops thru those sleeves. Just unsure how the elastic loops on the inside of the hipbelt will affect the feel and comfort?

Gossamer Gear sells hip belt pockets with elastic straps:

I have also seen something not too different from Zpacks and MLD.

Dana Design made something called the "wet rib" which attached to their packs without hip belt pockets. It’s large and includes a water bottle pouch. Maybe you could find one used, ebay, etc.
REI sells an aftermarket hip belt pocket that attaches to wide belts. I use this on my primary pack and it works well.

TurboHike and swimjam, thank you both for the information. I will check the readily available options that you suggested.
I have a DD dry rib (rib without water bottle pouch). Tried it, but it seemed that my girth was not sufficient for the pocket.

This is the one I'm using for 10+ trips and it's working well.
