October transportation from White Wolf to Tuolomne Meadows (or vice versa)

Post by jbullock35 »

In early October, I'm thinking of hiking the Grand Canyon of the Tuolomne River: Tuolomne Meadows to White Wolf. I have time to hike only from one point to the others; I can't hike from TM to WW and back again. So I am thinking of driving to White Wolf, taking a shuttle to Tuolomne Meadows, and then hiking to White Wolf and my car.

The problem is that shuttles don't seem to run between White Wolf and Tuolomne Meadows in October. For example, YARTS and the Hiker's Bus won't do it. Apart from hitchhiking, are there any options for this sort of transportation?

If you can get more than one permit and another interested person, you can leave a car on both ends and either self-shuttle, or do a car swap prior and hike from either side. Apart from that and your thumb, I do not know.

It is a ~3hr bike ride between the two trailheads. Drop your pack off at Tuolumne, drive your car to White Wolf, and bike back to your pack.

Hitching is also quite effective in Yosemite.

Thank you, Blastomatic and c9h13n03, for the advice.

It looks as though at least two taxi services will provide scheduled rides between the two locations. One is Mammoth Taxi (https://www.mammoth-taxi.com/long_dista ... ations.php). Another is MAWS (https://letsride.co/services/trailhead-shuttle/).

Be sure to check that you will still be allowed to park when you come out. Years ago Oct 15 was the deadline for parking. I did a trip with five others and after dropping them off at our start, I drove back and parked at the gas station and then hitched up to meet the others. At that time it was a lot easier for a woman to hitch so I was appointed to the task. Also, early snowstorms could close the road. If forecast, Yosemite will not allow parking during that time period and often will temporarily close the road.
