Corona Virus

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

I shop Winco- you bag your own groceries. So far they let you use your own bags. I carry a spray bottle of Clorox Clean-up in my car with some rags. I get the cart from the outside, spray and wipe it down, then go into the store. I have not previously, but now they want you to wear a mask. They only let a certain number in the store at once- you line up outside; early AM old folks hours. I only go once a week to every 10 days. They also now pre-bag all the bulk food (as does Sprouts). When I get home, I wipe down boxes and cans, and wash all produce. I got tired of washing all my clothes every time I went to the store, so now I "quarantine" my coat for 4 days in a spare bedroom. Then I take a shower.

Walking the dog today 6 miles on the American River and about a third of the people had face masks. I do not wear one outside because there just are so few people and it is easy to cross the street and get far away. I have never even seen anyone cough. Guys are still fishing the river. One fellow was in the river in waders with a baby in a backpack. He was casting, the baby was howling. Beautiful weather today; wildflowers are at their peak after our good rain the last few days. Outhouses are still open, but if I have to go, I squat behind a tree. I go in the morning. I think the school kids have their remote classes in the morning. Most people go out between 3 and 5PM so I avoid that time.

We've been hiking around Napa, on both streets and trails. Daisy, you are correct about the timing. Later afternoon is when we see the most people out. But we have a few routes that allow us to get away from most people and still walk 3-7 miles. I think about half of he people we see are wearing masks. We are not, unless we go into a store. Out on the streets or trails we can easily stay well away from others,

On the streets, people are changing direction and/or the side of the street about a block away. That's social distancing!

If you got sick anytime since December...there's a chance you've had corona already and are now immune to coronavirus.
New signs suggest coronavirus was in California far earlier than anyone knew
LA Times
...
But Smith on Friday said data collected by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, local health departments and others suggest it was “a lot longer than we first believed” — most likely since “back in December.”

“This wasn’t recognized because we were having a severe flu season,” Smith said in an interview. “Symptoms are very much like the flu. If you got a mild case of COVID, you didn’t really notice. You didn’t even go to the doctor. The doctor maybe didn’t even do it because they presumed it was the flu.”

It all gets back to the issue that we don't really know enough about this dieases.

And some stories have noted that people can get it twice...although the most recent information is that those people may never have fully recovered, but the tests are no accurate enough. Either way, if you have had coronavirus, don't assume you can't get sick again, or make other people sick.

In more urban environments, people are still walking more--and the city of Oakland is closing 10% of its streets to traffic to allow more pedestrians...

Sorry. Not wearing a mask. That shouldn't be a new normal.

Just watched this video. I found his address uplifting. I'm glad he made it and hope that everyone else who has the virus recovers too. This is a disease you don't want to get:

Too funny. I'll be using a bandana, by the way.

Russ, What about a bandana? How can you resist lurking into your bank in full camo, dark glasses, and bandana? Go on, make my day! or,
use this-- why can't I imagine you in a rainbow jockstrap big Russ? Do you still have your rough old football jockstrap?

I am adding this great short video that Turbohike posted, just so nobody misses it. Thanks to Turbohike!
