Re: Corona Virus
Actually, we can go back to everything as before.
Most will live and some will be lost.
Evolution at work.
I just want my restaurants open again.

Re: Corona Virus
One reason why Italy had such a high coronavirus death rate is that they counted any one who died and tested positive as a "coronavirus death." So if you had heart failure and died, and you tested positive even though you never showed symptoms, you were counted as having died by coronavirus. Which is, of course, silly.

Re: Corona Virus
Over 3 hours knocked out masks 5 and 6 this rainy afternoon. Each one is a bit different due to molding the filtrete thin chicken wire screens. Will be giving all but one to 4 brothers and a nephew that live elsewhere here in Northern California. Still have MERV 12 fabric and screening for maybe 8 more, I'll continue to gradually work on and donate extras.
Have been street hiking a few miles about half the week, however my fitness is degenerating from where I was a month ago when the ski season was ended. Had 24 days in mostly looping bumps all day on Little Dipper at Heavenly and have had painful withdrawals from not being able to ski fresh powder after the jetstream began bringing storms back into the state. Seems a long time ago. At least we might have a more normal Sierra Nevada summer now given the added snow pack though not if the virus is still an issue.

Re: Corona Virus
That would be the mortality rate for confirmed cases, not the overall mortality rate. The CDC states that 80% of tested cases show mild to no symptoms. Probably, when you included untested cases, that figure is much higher. But let's go with 80%.
21000 confirmed cases + 120000 unconfirmed cases = 141000 total cases. /715 = 0.5%. Still higher than the flu, but the flu mutates and returns every year so we can't build lasting immunity to it. So far, coronavirus hasn't done that and coronaviruses aren't particularly known for mutation.
Now, let's add another factor. I'm sorry, but the fact is that the Baby Boomer generation is huge, and even without the virus, Boomers are dying in droves. They're dying from the standard stuff. Heart disease, cancer, lung disease, etc... So if a person has had 4 heart attacks and they have emphysema, and they catch Corona and die... Did Corona kill them because it's just such a lethal illness, or were they going to die soon anyway, and Corona was just the straw that broke the camel's back?
It's a fact that the European countries with the highest mortality rates... Italy and Spain... also have Europe's most elderly populations.

Re: Corona Virus
Italy's elderly population is not significantly higher than Germany's yet the death rate in Italy is MUCH higher. This isn't just an "old person's" problem.
And the death rates in nursing homes and (now) cruise ships is truly horrifying. Yes, those are elderly populations. But that's no reason to discount this virus and its impacts on our families and our friends.

This article also mentions that the beach may not be such a great place to be because the virus washes out to sea then re-enters the air from wave action on the beach.
